When I heard that former Met favorite Gary Carter was diagnosed with malignant brain tumors, I felt such a sadness for this man, who was such joy for the Mets.
I remember in 1983 when the Mets got Carter - I couldn't believe that he was going to be a Met. I had a similar feeling when Keith Hernandez became a Met. I knew that the Mets were going in the right direction and that a big year was coming. Of course, 1986 was on the horizon.
Carter was such fun to watch and that's why he had the nickname Kid. He played like a kid. He had fun like a kid. But he also was serious about his craft. He called a great game and was wonderful with the pitching staff. And he also had a few clutch hits, especially in that magical year of 1986.
Please keep Gary and his family in your thoughts and prayers in this most difficult time. I know he went into the Hall of Fame as an Expo, but Mets fans know he is really our Hall of Famer.
