Interview with former Met Minor Leaguer Adam Bostick

Last week I had the chance to interview Adam Bostick. For those of you who don't remember Bostick, he was acquired from the Marlins with Jason Vargas for Matt Lindstrom & Henry Owens.

Will Sommer

I'm always curious on a comparison between the level of play in independent ball versus minor league ball. Are there major differences or are the differences subtle?

 

Adam Bostick

I guess it's a subtle difference.  I mean guys here played either in minor league ball or some - - got some big league time.  I mean they know the game. They're pretty knowledgeable about the game of baseball.

 

Will Sommer

You spent a couple years in the Mets' system, how was that for you?

 

Adam Bostick

I had a good time in the Mets' system.  My best years with the Mets were as a reliever, which was last year, so there's no hard feelings.  But playing for the Mets, I just had a good year last year as a reliever.  Maybe if I was reliever starting off, maybe it'd been a little different story.  I had a good time with the Mets and made some good friends and played some good baseball games.

There's been a lot said over the past few years about the Mets' power struture, whether it has been that Tony Bernazard situation or the general feeling that the Mets often rush their players.  What kind of job do you think the Mets, as an organization, are doing to set up young players for future success at the big league level?

 

Adam Bostick

I think they have good coaches, good coaching staff and good coordinators. I really don't know what their plans are as far as moving guys up.  I didn't really experience that. I spent so little time in Double-A and most of my time there in Triple-A, so I really don't know how like how they see like advancing people.  I didn't really see that.  

 

Will Sommer

Have any major league teams contacted you about a possible minor league deal?

 

Adam Bostick

As of right now, no, I haven't heard.  I've been looking to go over like to Taiwan and Japan and stuff as of right now, but this is the first opportunity I had so I took it.  I just want to get back in the swing of baseball seeing how as I served a 50-game suspension, so I just want to get back in the routine of baseball, pitching.  I really wanted to get on the field as soon as possible.

Are you enjoying independent ball or do you yearn to be in affiliated baseball?

 

Adam Bostick

I mean I love the game of baseball. I just like to play.  I mean if I'm playing for an affiliate or I'm playing in indy ball, I'm still going to give my all.  Of course everybody here wants to play for affiliated team and get that chance.  Everybody wants to play in the big show. I mean I like playing indy ball. I like playing affiliated ball.  I have a couple guys on this team I played with, with the Mets actually, Jose Sanchez and Tim McNab, so I mean it's good to see those guys.  It's good to meet new people.  

 

Will Sommer

Are you a starter or a reliever with your team right now?

 

Adam Bostick

As of right now, I'm a starter.

 

Will Sommer

Do you have any preference whatsoever?

 

Adam Bostick

No, not so much. I like starting, but there's no problem with me relieving.  Like I said, my most successful minor league baseball was probably last year as a reliever and it was a good fit, but I just didn't get a chance to prove it at the big league level.

What has independent ball taught you that maybe the Mets or the Marlins didn't teach you?

 

Adam Bostick

Well as a younger player, it was more taking things for granted.  Playing in indy ball, you see the guys that still want to get back to affiliated ball. They still work just the same. I mean it's easy just to call it quits and hang it up and go live the family life, but I’m still working toward that dream and there's no lack of work here, like their work ethic is the same as it is in affiliated ball and there's less people telling you what to do here, so I mean it's pretty much harder to maintain that baseball workout type deal when there's no one on top of you like there is in affiliated ball.  So I mean I give these guys a lot of credit.

if you don't sign on with a major league club, do you think your future is overseas, maybe somewhere in Asia?

 

Adam Bostick

Yeah, I mean I just want to play the game as long as possible till I can't play it anymore.  So if it takes me overseas, yeah, I mean I'll go play and do it, but I mean there's always that dream of playing in the MLB.  That's the dream to play against the best and it's in the major leagues. So, yeah, I mean if I can't make it back in affiliated ball, yes, I will go play in an Asian country.

Do you have any regrets for taking illegal substances by major league baseball?

 

Adam Bostick

I lost my job so I mean of course I have regrets.  I mean it was a dumb mistake.  Obviously it wasn't very beneficial to me at all seeing how that I'm not playing affiliated ball right now.

 

Will Sommer

So what did you learn after the first time you were suspended?

 

Adam Bostick

After the first time I was suspended, I was just young and dumb. I mean that's all there was to it.   

 

Will Sommer

Do you think that's the reason why you're not with the team right now?

 

Adam Bostick

Yeah, but I definitely wasn't taking steroids, so get that out of the way, and it was just a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I just happened to make mine twice.

 

Will Sommer

And I assume you can't tell me what drugs you were in violation for.

 

Adam Bostick

No.

I travel out of Texas frequently and I must say the roads here are very, very nice for the most part. Sounds like some of you are spoiled...take a trip to some of the other states and you and your car will be glad to be back on Texas highways.
