Author: Will Sommer
The other day Andrew Vazzano of The Ropolitans linked to a video titled “I Hate the Mets Most” it was a nice song with a catchy tune. Actually it was a very good video even though I hate their title the most. Anyway I e-mailed David Cutler and Casey Morris who go by the name "Tomahawk Dudes" a couple of questions, and they were nice enough to respond. (Editors note: Braves Fans are actually nice people, unlike the fans from a certain city named Philadelphia.)
Will Sommer: When did you come up with the idea for the song?
Tomahawk Dudes: We came up with this song on December 10, 2009, after just finishing our final exams at Georgia Southern. We were just sitting around and Casey was playing the guitar as usual. We started thinking, let’s write a Braves song! We sat down, wrote the lyrics and then recorded it a few times. We let our neighbors watch it and they said that they loved it, so we decided to put it on YouTube that night as “Atlanta Braves Tribute”. It took off and the views just kept coming. We decided to start a YouTube account under the name “tomahawk dudes” that would allow us to make more songs under that name. We posted it again as “I Hate the Mets the Most” to try to get more hits.
Sommer: Who wrote the lyrics of this song?
Tomahawk Dudes: Most of the song’s lyrics were written by David Cutler. Casey Morris played the guitar and helped with the way we wanted the song to flow. Eric Church’s song “Love your Love the Most” was chosen for the melody because that was our current favorite country song at the moment. Also, one of our friends, David Williamson, helped us with a few lines in the song. The entire process, from writing the lyrics to uploading it to YouTube, took a grand total of about 2 hours. Casey and I do have plans to continue writing some more songs about the Braves. Our goal is to hopefully make an entire CD of just Braves songs. We will not make any promises that any subscribers or journalists of MetsFansForever.com
will approve, but we hope to write songs that any baseball fan can
relate to and songs that will entertain and drive the competitiveness
of “America’s Favorite Pastime”. We just want people to be entertained by what we do. We
are just two college kids at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro,
Georgia that love the Braves and are just trying to have a little fun.
People always say, “Good writers love to write, but great writers write
about what they love”, and that is exactly what we are doing.
Sommer: Why so much hate on the Mets? Why not the Phillies? After all they are the best team in the East.
Tomahawk Dudes: There is a pretty simple reason as to why we chose the Mets. The Mets have always been the biggest rival for the Braves and it is a given that if you are a Braves fan, you hate the Mets, period. As you may know, there are some of the best rivalries in the South. It’s just like if you are a Georgia Bulldog fan, you are going to hate the Florida Gators. We do not like the Phillies, Marlins, or Nationals either but as the song illustrates, we just hate the Mets the Most. We think a lot of the hatred between these two ball clubs spawns from their history. From all the close games, to playoff battles, controversy on the diamond is no stranger between these two teams. We know that every time the Braves travel to Citi Field that #10 for the Braves will step into the batter box and the “Larry Chant” will soon follow. Also, when the Mets take the trip to Turner Field, it is a given that the stadium will be filled to capacity with die-hard Braves fans. We just know as loyal Braves fans that if someone asks a “true Braves fan” who is the Braves’ biggest rival; it is going to be the Mets nine times out of ten.
Sommer: What do you have to say about Jeff Francoeur? Do you now hate him because he is on the Mets?
Tomahawk Dudes: (David’s answer ) Jeff was my favorite Braves player; I own 2 Francoeur jerseys and 2 of his Braves t- shirts. He was just the player that I loved to watch, that’s the reason that we put “Heck yes I miss Francoeur” in the song. I could never hate Frenchy because he is still one of my favorite players to watch. He shows great character on and off the field and is a guy that I look up to because of his Christian faith and love for the game. I was so mad when he got traded to the Mets, even though he was struggling, but I just think we gave up on him way too early. I mean, look at the season he had for the Mets and look what Ryan Church did for us. The stats do not lie. In my opinion, we gave one of our fan favorite players and a potential franchise player away for someone who didn’t even show half the potential as Jeff did. I think that Jeff was just as hurt about the trade, as well as all the Frenchy fans in Atlanta, because the Braves are his hometown and favorite team. I hope that he does awesome in his career and is quite frankly the only Mets player that I want to succeed. As far as I am concerned, Francoeur is welcomed back in Atlanta any time.
Sommer: What was your inspiration to make this video?
Tomahawk Dudes: Our inspiration came from the “Mark Teixeira Song” that 2 Braves fans did two years ago. The video that they made was the spark that started our project and made us want to show that we love the Braves and support the Braves as well. We hope that all Braves fans out there support us and hope to start a fire in the hearts of Georgians from the Smokey Mountains to Savannah. We also wanted to spread the Braves fan base as much as possible by allowing other people to feed off our love for the Braves. We are not in denial; we realize that the Mets have a larger fan base than the Braves. This project is just an effort to try to expand the National fan base of the Atlanta Braves. Go Braves! Go America!
Thanks again to the Tomahawk Dudes for answering my questions. If you haven't seen their video yet, be sure to click here.
