Pat Misch looked good for his second straight start and helped propel the Mets to a 5-1 victory over the Astros on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field in a game that was delayed two hours and twenty minutes for rain in the fifth inning.
In last start, Misch (3-4) tossed a complete-game shutout against the Marlins. And after five yesterday, he had allowed just a single run on five hits. That completed Misch's day, but it was most likely the extended rain delay that prevented manager Jerry Manual from bringing him back for a sixth inning.
Misch could be one of the few bright spots this season and will hopefully add depth to a 2010 Mets' rotation that needs a lot of help, the way it currently sits.
The Mets pitcher even got in on the action offensively, plating Anderson Hernandez in the third inning when Miguel Tejada made an error on Misch's ground ball. Hernandez had prevously driven home Cory Sullivan with a double.
Tejada's sacrifice fly cut the score in half in the third, but the Mets increased the gap to 4-1 with a Fernando Tatis, broken-bat single that scored Luis Castillo and Sullivan in the fifth.
The game would be delayed by rain at the end of the fifth, and the Mets added only a Josh Thole RBI after that. Earlier in the fourth, Thole's triple was the team's 48th, a franchise-record.
Francisco Rodriguez converted the save, his 35th of the season, by recording the last out of the game.
Interestingly, David Wright was given the day off for some rest according to ESPN.Com, while Carlos Beltran was a late scratch because he was feeling ill.
Why Wright needed a day off seemed to be beyond a lot of Mets fans that I heard, unless of course there is something we don't know.
The season finally wraps up today when the Mets and Astros complete their three-game series with Nelson Figueroa facing Wilton Lopez.
