The Marlins defeated the Mets by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday night. Brian Sanches got the win for the Marlins coming in in relief of Rick Vandenhurk and Burke Badenhoff. Tim Redding took the loss for the Mets giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. Redding was victimized by the home run ball with Hanley Ramirez and Cameron Maybin hitting two-run homers for the Marlins.
Redding was walking too many hitters and put himself in a position where he was asking for trouble. I can't see how the Mets view Redding as anything more than a long reliever next year.
The big story was Carlos Beltran's return to the Mets. Beltran went 1-4 with a double in his return, but came a few feet away from a grandslam in the seventh. Beltran generally looked good at the plate and it had to be a lift for his teammates to have #15 back where he belongs.
I have to say seeing Beltran out there was a sight for sore eyes. In this disasterous season we will atleast get to see our franchise center fielder for the last 3 weeks and I'm grateful for that.
The Mets were able to cut into Florida's lead with a sac fly from Josh Thole and an infield hit by Luis Castillo, but squandered many opportunities through out the game with runners on and less than 2 outs.
It was frustrating that the Mets weren't able to score in those situations. They may not be playing for much, but lets not forget this is the same Florida team that knocked us out of the playoffs two years in a row on the last day of the season.
The Mets continue their three game series tomorrow night when Ricky Nolasco takes on Pat Misch at 7:10.
