With all the festivities for the All Star Game over in St. Louis, tomorrow it will be time to get back to baseball. Greg gave his thoughts on the first half of the season, and I thought I'd follow it up by sharing my own. The Mets stand 42-45 and in 4th place in the division. It is clearly not where they were hoping they'd be at this point in the season. Despite the fact the team is in 4th place it is lucky it is not 10 plus games out.
What we saw in the first half of the season was sloppy baseball. Base running mistakes, errors, and players playing out of position was the dominant theme. Fernando Tatis has played left, right, shortstop, second base, and first base during the first half. June was only the second month in the team's history that both the starters and bullpen ERA was over 5.00 for an entire month. The only other time this was the case was 1962,their inaugural season. Despite the weak roster and plethora of injuries, the Mets are still within striking distance if they can get healthy.
Before the final game of the first half, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado were seen doing agility drills and taking batting practice. Reyes had not done any sort of running drills and Delgado had not taken live batting practice since their respective injuries. If the team doesn't get blown out the water in the next three weeks, we may see the return of these two players that will buoy their chances considerably.
With all the negativity surrounding this team in the media, you may think that this is a pipe dream and that there are too many "ifs" for this to happen. I would rather look at it as there's still hope and I will hold on to that hope until all the games have been played.
