I am officially running out of things to write about the Mets. What can I add that hasn't been already mentioned nationwide by people who are now treating our team as a laughing stock. The fact that they are only 3 games out is amazing in itself to me. I just hope that we can hold it together until Delgado, Beltran and Reyes come back but I have my doubts.
Have there been positive elements to the Mets team lately? Well, for me, Fernando Nieves has been a wonderful plus for this team. He has pitched well and seems very composed for such a young player. And David Wright continues to lead the league in average, although his power numbers are way down this year and the strikeouts continue to grow. And actually, despite his big blunder against the Yanks, Luis Castillo has played pretty well this year.
But the negatives outweigh the positives at this point. Our defense has been terrible and someone needs to explain to Daniel Murphy the fundamentals of first base and what to do when the ball is hit to you. That play the other night in the Yankees game was atrocious. Hey, Keith Hernandez, come down from the booth and give the kid some pointers, would you?
I know there is a lot of season left and because no one else is playing well, we are still in it. But we need to get it together and now. The urgency of the situation can not be lost on anyone. The Mets need to figure out how to manufacture runs using small ball because the power is not there right now. Jerry Manuel, here is your time to shine.
