I like statistics. I am not Rob Neyer or Billy Beane but I do like to look at some basic statistics. Often, when I do, I am always able to see some interesting things. Some obvious and others not so obvious. Most fall in the category of “Did you know?” others into the “That’s interesting”. Here is a few.
We have all complained of the lack of clutch and timely hitting from the mets. They always seem to lack that breakthrough hit in games and when they lose you can always look back at the “bases loaded strikeout”. Did you know that the mets are actually fourth in runs scored in the National league? I dare you to guess who number 3 is! The Pittsburgh Pirates, yes those Pittsburgh Pirates. The other two are the obvious Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies.
In pitching the Mets are actually
seventh in earned run average in the national league and NO the Pittsburgh
Pirates are not ahead of them (they are dead last with a 5.28 era.).
What is interesting is that they are 14th in all of baseball
and the 13th is???? The NY Yankees. Yes those Yankees.
Here are two players. See if you can guess before I give it away. Player A is 8 yrs older than player B. Both players play the same position and both hit from the same side of the plate. Player A is a former All-star and last played for his league in 2003. Player B is also a former All-star and last played for his league in 2006. Player A is 6’3” and Player B is 6’4”. When both players are at the plate teams tend to over shift their defense to the right side of the diamond. Any guesses yet? Player A and Player B both currently (as I write this) have an .823 OPS. Player B has 18 more Abs than Player A but has struck out 56 times more than Player A. Player B is in a tie for the league lead in homers and leads the league in RBIs. Player A is tied for his teams lead in HRs and third on his team in RBIs. Player B as you may have guessed is Ryan Howard and Player A is Carlos Delgado.
