Like a Thief in the Night

The Mets handled the Willie Randolph firing just as bad as it could have been done. The middle of the night firing reminded me of the 1984 Baltimore Colts debacle. Remember when the ownership of the Colts moved the team in the middle of the night to Indianapolis? Maybe no one would notice the parade of moving vans sneaking out of Baltimore. If it happens in the middle of the night, no one would know, right?

Wrong!

I agree that the Mets needed to make a change. It is a shame that the manager has to get fired when the players are not producing. But to treat Willie in this cruel, unprofessional manner makes me embarrassed to be a Mets fan. Willie always carried himself with class and dignity and all that was thrown out the window. What a shame. I hope that Willie gets another chance at managing.

      As for the Mets future, I am willing to wait and see what Jerry Manuel will do differently. Although Jose Reyes did not make it easy for Jerry in the first inning last night, I was glad to see Jerry’s response to it. Reyes was clearly wrong – he should be glad that Manuel wants to watch out for his health. All the Mets would need now is to lose Reyes for an extended period of time.

      

This change can do one of two things – it can either send the Mets into a tailspin or light a fire under this team and get them going. The players need to look at their performance and realize that they cost 3 people their jobs. If that is not motivation enough, then maybe this team is not as good as we all thought they would be.

Hi Clare,
Good post. I agree everything about this was handled w/out class.
It was really pathetic.
I don't think that the firing will help...this is a player problem, which won't be fixed until the season ends...which probably means Manuel won't be around next year ne way...
I'm sure the owners will want to make a big splash with a new manager...maybe Oberkfell?
I'm still hoping they turn it around, I'd love to see them take the division back from that scum in Philly.

Thanks Pete. I would love to have them beat Philly too since I live right outside of Philly and it's torture to hear those Phillies fans mock our Mets.
